Mini-quilt Swap

The Gluten Free Quilter hosts a quilt swap each year. It's open to quilters of all skill levels and is a bit like a Secret Santa gift exchange. You fill out a questionnaire, get paired with a partner, and learn all about their likes and dislikes, favorite treats, and any sewing notions they might need. The catch? You can't tell them who you are.

My quilty friend loves Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, golf, and books. Lots and lots of books. She also gravitates toward a more modern quilting style. As I brainstormed ideas, I knew I wanted to lean into the nerdier side of her interests.

I also didn't want to spend much money, so I challenged myself to create something almost entirely from what I already had on hand. The book block came from a foundation paper piecing pattern by Kate Basti that I already owned. I added a vibrant sawtooth star in the corner for a little extra pop. Every bit of fabric came from my scrap stash, and even the batting was pieced together from leftovers from previous quilts.

There are definitely a few flaws and some questionable angles if you look too closely, but overall, I'm really happy with how it turned out. I probably should have used actual patterns for the dice, but sometimes you just have to see where creativity takes you.

One of my favorite details is the book itself. I designed the cover to resemble the back of a Magic: The Gathering card. Then I embroidered golden swirls around the book and dice to give the mini-quilt a bit of magic-vibe, as though a spell might be hiding between the pages.

When it came time to bind it, I found the perfect fabric tucked away in my scrap stash. I instantly fell in love with all the colors, and it ended up being exactly what the quilt needed. Sometimes the best finishing touches are the ones you've had all along.

This little quilt may not be perfect, but it was made with a lot of thought, creativity, and love—and that's what quilt swaps are all about.
