How To Tell a Story Through a Quilt

We celebrated my birthday yesterday! I went through the day with no expectations and it turned out to be a pretty great day! My husband accidentally bought me three puzzles instead of the original two he was planning on. Hah. Bring it on!

Sometimes the best stories come from unexpected moments. Just as every day unfolds a little differently, every quilt can tell a story. Here are a few ways to be intentional about yours. You will often hear that ‘every quilt tells a story’—which is true, but also kind of a blanket statement; no pun intended. So how do you intentionally tell a story through a quilt?

Start with a Feeling

Before choosing fabric or a pattern, think about the feeling you want your quilt to convey.

Is it playful, peaceful, bold, cozy, or nostalgic? Maybe you want to capture the feeling of a summer afternoon or the warmth of home. Let that feeling guide your choices.

My Broken & Beautiful quilt pattern was inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. I wanted to represent the cracks in the pottery and the gold that fills them. To do this, I used scraps to bring out the idea of cracks and interwove golden pieces of fabric and thread where I could. I wanted the quilt to reflect the beauty in our imperfections and the way our experiences become part of our stories.

Choose Your Fabrics

Fabric does more than add color to a quilt. Prints, textures, and contrast all help tell the story.

Small, subtle prints can create a quiet, gentle feel, while bold patterns and high contrast bring energy and movement. Mixing different scales and textures can add depth and interest.

In my String Cheese quilt, an abundance of florals, with a variety in volume, combine together with pops of three colors and a handful neutrals to bring out that homey warmth. They're subtle details that help carry the meaning behind the design.

Find the Right Pattern

The pattern helps bring your story together. Geometric shapes can feel modern and structured, while softer shapes may feel playful or whimsical.

Consider how the pattern works with your fabrics. You want the design to support your story, not compete with it.

For Broken & Beautiful, the design helps communicate the idea of brokenness and beauty coming together. The pattern and fabric choices work together to reflect the story behind it. Also, what could be a more fun way to get your scraps to work together?!

Use Color Intentionally

Color has a way of setting the mood. Warm colors can feel inviting and energetic, while cool colors often feel calm and restful. Even a small accent color can help reinforce your story.

For my String Cheese quilt, I wanted a country feel. Using a combination of colors—golden yellow of sunflowers, warm brown, turquoise, soft neutrals—in a variety of floral prints, I set out to create a warm, cozy, welcoming vibe that feels like home. Each color contributes to the overall feeling, helping bring the story to life.

Let the Season Inspire You

Seasons and holidays can be a natural starting point for a quilt's story. Think of the bright colors of summer, the muted tones of autumn, or the soft colors of spring. Think of snowmen, reindeer and trees for Christmas or the pastel colors of Easter. Think of the spookiness of Halloween or the patriotism of the Fourth of July.

You can also tell a seasonal story without using traditional seasonal prints. Sometimes a color palette or a particular pattern is enough to evoke a feeling.

Tell Your Story, One Stitch at a Time

You don't have to plan every detail perfectly. Start with a feeling, then choose fabrics and a pattern that help bring it to life.

Quilting gives us a way to tell stories through the things we make. With a little intention, your next quilt can be more than a beautiful design. It can tell a story that's uniquely yours.
