Bow Ties Galore

A messy pile of bow ties

Back in January, I received a bunch of unfinished projects from my mom’s cousin after her mom had passed away. My great aunt was really into quilting and had a lot of unfinished projects that needed some love. I’ve taken to heart to finish as many as I can. Amongst the loot, was SEVERAL precut bowtie pieces, some hand-pieced finished bowtie blocks and an unfinished bow tie quilt (also hand pieced) that just needed to be assembled. I learned that some of these pieces were put together by my great grandma. I had no idea she even quilted!

But seriously… there are so many bow ties! So what to do with them?

I’ve turned the finished bow tie blocks and turned them into a quilt jacket.

Bow Tie Quilt Top

I’ve assembled the quilt top together—all I need to do now is get a backing and send it off to my friend to get it quilted.

I’m in the process of cutting more pieces out of muslin to possibly create another quilt jacket. The biggest issue I’m facing is getting all of the bow ties that I’m piecing together to be square. Each set ranges between 3 1/4” and 3 3 3/4” square pieces… It’s been frustrating to say the least. I seriously wonder how my great aunt was able to piece all of the other blocks together by hand so neatly! It’s quite an ode to her skillset!
